How Can We Help?

Stakeholder Engagement - Upgrading to Niagara4

What Is Niagara4?

Niagara4 is a software framework developed by Tridium that unifies device level data and control logic into a single, cyber secure platform. It provides a central console for monitoring, alarming, scheduling, and custom logic across mechanical, electrical, and IoT systems. Its modular, service oriented architecture supports seamless integration of hundreds of device protocols and data sources.

Why Niagara4 is becoming the de-facto BMS Standard

  • Niagara4 has become the industry’s preferred framework due to its open architecture and multi-vendor interoperability.
  • OEMs can white label and extend the core platform, while a robust ecosystem of certified third party and OEM plug-in drivers simplifies equipment integration.
  • With a strong focus on cybersecurity and compliance, Niagara4 ensures future proof scalability and a global support network.

White Labelling by Leading BMS Manufacturers

Major BMS vendors white label Niagara4 under their own brands, layering proprietary extensions, custom drivers, graphic overlays, and integration adapters, on top of Tridium’s core platform while preserving:

  • The common Niagara4 software tooling (workbench, framework services, security model)
  • Native protocol stacks such as BACnet, Modbus, oBIX
  • The open architecture that allows loading free or off the shelf, community-developed drivers

Examples of white-labellers include:

  • Trend Controls
  • Schneider Electric
  • Delta Controls
  • Distech Controls
  • iSMA Controlli
  • Tyrrell Products
  • Innotech

Each vendor delivers plug-in modules ranging from advanced graphic applications to bespoke integration adapters tailored for specialized hardware. Tridium also have their own hardware device called the JACE, a Niagara4 controller that combines on-board processing, I/O connectivity, and network interfaces into a single, robust package.

What You’re Buying with a Niagara4 Controller

By upgrading to a Niagara4-based controller, you gain:

  • A future-ready platform supported by multiple OEMs
  • Access to a broad library of pre-built drivers for faster commissioning and reduced maintenance
  • High performance, web-native interfaces for desktop and mobile devices
  • Built in cybersecurity features, certificate management, and compliance software tooling
  • A thriving partner ecosystem offering custom apps, analytics, and ongoing support

What We Typically Recommend and Why

Our standard installations leverage Niagara4’s flexibility to minimize future rewiring and system migration while ensuring long term reliability and support. We choose each component for its unique strengths:

  • JACE Controller: Tridium’s own Niagara4 engine combining on board processing, I/O connectivity, and network ports in one robust package. We deploy the JACE as the base controller in our system architecture to maximize interchangeability during future migrations or upgrades, only the JACE needs replacing while remote I/O modules remain in place for the installation’s entire lifecycle.

  • iSMA MAC36: A JACE controller but with 36 onboard hardwired I/O points. By integrating these I/O directly onboard it cuts out the need for extra expansion modules while retaining full Niagara4 processing, networking, and integration capabilities.

  • iSMA Expansion I/O Modules: DIN-rail mounted I/O modules installed alongside the MAC36 or JACE and linked over open protocols (BACnet/IP, Modbus IP or RS-485). Their vendor neutral communication ensures seamless integration with any Niagara4 based controller, lets you add points incrementally without major rewiring, and future proofs your system against obsolescence.

  • iSMA Android Touchscreen: A modern HMI that runs Niagara4 graphics.  It delivers a tablet style interface for technicians and facility managers to view and interact with alarms, trends, and controls at the point of use.

  • Reflow Graphics Application by NiagaraMods: A responsive, HTML5-based dashboard toolkit built on Niagara4. It includes pre-built templates and drag and drop widgets for rapid UI development; consistent branding across projects; easy customization of colours, layouts, and data visualizations; and seamless integration with Niagara4 alarms, trends, and security models.

These solutions are openly distributed and widely adopted across the broader BMS community, making parts, service, and expertise readily accessible. As a business focused on small to medium sized applications, we choose these configurations because they deliver:

  • Lower total cost of ownership thanks to open distribution, competitive pricing, and reduced manufacturer monopooly
  • Future proof scalability that adapts smoothly as your facility grows
  • Broad serviceability with common tooling and a global network of qualified engineers
  • Comprehensive technical support backed by robust manufacturer warranties
  • Proven reliability and high system uptime in diverse installations
  • Simplified maintenance through shared community resources and standardized drivers
